Happy Birthday, Grandma!

It's May Day, and Mae Day, since this was the day my grandmother was born 100 years ago today. Grandma's birthday was particularly memorable for me since mom would make up flower baskets for us to take to the neighbors in Green Bay. I always think of grandma when I see pansies. This picture is from her 90th birthday. She was such a beautiful woman. I miss her a great deal.

Thanks for making this blog. Grandma Rau was quite a wonderful grandma. I remember going to her house every Sunday. We went to Central Park Congregational Church right by her house on Saratoga St. It was such a tradition. It was home. Mostly I remember playing cards. Hardly a time went by when we weren't going home with a quarter in our hand. Sometimes grandma would hire my brother to mow the lawn. She also had a job for me too, I got a job too. I picked up the sticks in the yard first. There was one thing we always could count on, that was LOVE>

Before we had kids, Jackie and I went to visit Grandma and Herman at their Yucaipa home. They gave us the tour, including one of our first frolics on the beach. They took us to Newport Beach. They sent us home with a bookcase that they no longer needed. We still use that bookcase to this day.
One time we took our young children, Brooks and Abby, to visit Grandma when she lived in her apartment. We live in Phoenix where there are no lightning bugs. But when we stayed with her we sure got our fill of lightning bugs. It was an absolute thrill for our kids not to mention to my bride and me. We caught so many it was quite a memory. The jar with the temporary prisoners was like a lamp all night long. The kids will probably also remember the "Heinz-57" ketchup bottle sleeping bags she provided for them as well.
